The Holy Grail commeth today, Soulwax’s full on technicolor rework of Late Of The Pier’s already behemoth, ‘Best In Class’ that maxes out the fun dials ’til way past bedtime. On the flip is classically trained composer producer Simon Bookish rebuilding the whimsical ‘Blueberry’ over a lush electro-psych groove. Synth washes and effects are invested with a rare emotion to create a haunting yet playful slice of futuristic pop.

Gonzales’ 2001 track Take Me To Broadway was “a triumphant baroque-hop jam of digitized mandolin and bass-juddering lo-end“ and it meant a lot to stopmakingme (fabric / Kill Em All) when it came out in 2001.

Back before broadband internet and Youtube, the best way of hearing ‘alternative’ new music was to watch 120 Minutes on MTV2. It was always on at stupid-o-clock so I’d set the video recorder and rush downstairs the following morning, fast forwarding all the Belle & Sebastian rip-offs. ‘Take Me To Broadway’ sounded genuinely different to anything I’d heard before. Funny lyrics, oddball video, weird middle section and not to mention one of the best hip hop beats of the decade – Gonzales isn’t given enough credit for some of the music he’s made.

It was an important moment for a sixteen year old at that point in 2001. My love for the record immediately spurred my interest in similar things I had stupidly chosen to ignore before. Peaches, Fischerspooner, Tiga, Felix Da Housecat, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol…. plus a wealth of old post-punk and new wave tracks. It was extremely exciting. Then my friend told me about a club called Trash that played all of these records and another new obsession began, this time with their radio show podcasts as I was still young and far too much of a wiener to travel and experience the real thing first hand. It was an amazing feeling when I realised a couple of years later that I could play such records to other people in a club. And not everyone hated it! Out of them all, it’s the Gonzales track which sticks out the most in my memory. Here’s to Gonzo!!
